About: James Powderly is a full-time hobbyist dabbling at the fringes of graffiti, chemistry, pyrotechnics, robotics and art. As a Fellow in the Eyebeam R&D OpenLab since 2005, James has developed experimental creative technologies and media licensed for the public domain. Prior to coming to Eyebeam, he was an engineer and the Director of Technology Development at Honeybee Robotics, a Manhattan-based NASA contractor. He worked on developing the Mars Exploration Rover's Rock Abrasion Tool and built a wall drilling robot for Diller + Scofidio's retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art. James has been awarded numerous grants, fellowships and awards, including an Award of Distinction in 2006 from Ars Electronica for his work with the Graffiti Research Lab. In 2007, James co-curated an exhibition of tactics and tools for public action used by graffiti writers, protester, hackers, and artists entitled, "Open City". His work has been featured in publications like Time Magazine, The New York Times and Wired and can be found on the surface of Mars, galleries and other people's walls throughout the U.S. and Europe. James currently teaches the best class in the Parsons Communication Design and Technology program, called "Home X". I am James Powderly and I approve of this message.
